Tony- and Grammy Award-winning lyricist Sheldon Harnick, who with composer Jerry Bock made up the premier musical-theater songwriting duos of the 1950s and 1960s with shows such as "Fiddler on the Roof," "Fiorello!" and "The Apple Tree," has died. He was 99.

Harnick was the lyricist who came up with the earnest and thoughtful words scoring 'The Fiddler on the Roof.'

Fiddler On The Roof was a 1971 movie starring Topol and Norma Crane that centered on a Jewish peasant in Russia who has to marry off three of his daughters. Harnick died at home in NYC.

Known for his wry, subtle humor and deft wordplay, Harnick died in his sleep Friday in New York City of natural causes.
