A decision by the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg to reinstate 40 councillors from the EFF and the ANC has enabled the two parties to remove Mogale City Mayor Tyrone Gray in a no-confidence vote.

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has justified the ANC working with the EFF to boot out DA mayors in hung Gauteng metros, saying the party was simply interested in the stability of local government.

The Mogale City mayor in the West Rand of Johannesburg, Tyrone Gray from the Democratic Alliance (DA), was removed from office through a motion of no confidence, on Thursday, from an alliance between the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The decision came after the High Court reinstated ANC and EFF councillors, who were unlawfully removed. Also underway is the removal of the current Speaker of Council Jacqueline Pannal.

The 40 - from EFF and the ANC - have been trying to sponsor the removal of Speaker Jacqueline Pannal, mayor Tyrone Gray and chief whip Lesego Lekoto.

DA speaker Jacqueline Pannall postponed a meeting last week to get legal advice on the 40 councillors she dismissed for missing meetings.

This as three motions of no-confidence against the Speaker, mayor, and chief whip have finally made it onto Wednesdays council’s agenda.

The ANC and EFF alliance have set its sights on Gauteng hung councils, including Mogale City and the West Rand District Municipality.
