A VETERAN bell-ringer has retired as tower captain at the age of 88. Ian Taylor had been in the role at Ulverston’s St. Mary’s Parish Church for fifty years but has now officially retired. A serious motorcycle accident many years ago, when he lost his right leg, kept him from the tower for a while until he was able to negotiate the forty-three steps of the very narrow spiral staircase leading up to the ringing chamber. Recently a stroke has once again caused him to be temporarily absent from the tower. Bell-ringing is interesting, absorbing, there’s always something to learn and you meet a lot of nice people, he said.

Police investigate the death of a one-year-old baby A man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a baby in Barrow, police said. The one-year-baby boy was living with adoptive parents when he died and was still under the care of Cumbria County Council. The council have referred themselves for an independent review. The baby has been named in The Sun as Leiland Corkill. The national newspaper said Leiland died a day after being rushed to Furness General Hospital with a head injury. The Sun said Leiland was taken from his birth mum Laura at only 48-hours-old and placed into the care of Cumbria Social Services.
