I would very much like to support the campaign of Cllr Giles Archibald in favour of a new unitary local authority comprising the three Morecambe Bay district /borough council Areas. His proposal envisages an authority with credible geographical boundaries - the sea and the higher mountains. Its communications spine is simply the Furness Railway from Barrow to Lancaster, and the A590/A6/M6. - a spine that desperately needs a single local authority to speak for it. I am by no means hostile to Cumbria County Council But there is no prospect in the next decade of a Unitary based on the whole county being able to deliver effectively for the Southern part of Cumbria. Carlisle is just too far away, and the other side of a mountain chain with immense communications difficulties.
