Under Display Camera coming to at least five phones in 2021

(Pocket-lint) - There have been several rumours across numerous devices that suggest Under Display Camera technology isn t a million miles away from appearing on phones. The latest leak - from serial leaker Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) - claims it might be only months from apppearing though, suggesting we will see Under Display Cameras official debut in the second half of 2021 on at least five devices. Ice Universe loosely names a few of these devices, suggesting a Samsung folding device will offer the tech, along with the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4, Oppo folding device and devices from Vivo and ZTE. The second half of the year is when the Under Display Camera officially debuts, including at least Samsung (folding), Xiaomi (MIX4), OPPO (folding), vivo and ZTE (greatly improved version)

Although 2021 is proving to be another year dominated by the punch-hole displays, there is more to come. It’s no secret that many companies have been working secretly to mature the technology of in-display cameras. ZTE was the first to launch a commercially available smartphone with an in-display camera in the form of the ZTE Axon 20. However, the device had its shortcomings with subpar image quality. The company is set to launch the second generation of this technology soon through its ZTE Axon 30. Curiously, the device didn’t appear during the launch of the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra and ZTE Axon 30 Pro.

Samsung Files Patent For Under-Display Smartphone Camera

The patent comes with the trademark “Under Panel Camera” or UPC emanated from Seoul-based Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and is linked to Samsung. The patent falls under the category ‘Smartphone/TV display panel’, LetsGoDigital reported. Samsung seems to be preparing to apply this new camera technology in several types of products. The ZTE Axon 20 5G is the world’s first smartphone with an under-display camera. Samsung’s new patent is aimed at building handsets with a similar “invisible” camera feature.

Android Community January 14, 2021 Samsung is always busy. Especially after today, the South Korean tech giant will spend lots of time promoting the new Galaxy S21 series and telling the world how the new Galaxy premium flagship phones will make our lives easier. Even before the Unpacked event, the company has teased a new OLED technology that appears to have a camera underneath. It may be connected to the Under Display Camera tech we’ve been anticipating will be used on future Galaxy phones but this one is implemented on a laptop. A laptop with a camera under the Samsung OLED screen may be introduced first before we see it on a smartphone. Samsung may be testing the concept on other devices. It’s only a matter of time before we get to see and use the UDC.
