Environmental Legal and Policy Review to Inform the Emerging Oil and Gas Sector in Somalia

With oil and gas reserves, both onshore and offshore, the Government of Somalia is working to strengthen the environmental management and governance of its oil and gas sector. In August 2020, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) opened its first ever offshore licensing round, which is still ongoing.  UNEP and the Government of Norway's OfD Programme are collaborating to assist the Government of Somalia to enhance institutional capacities for improved environmental governance and management in the country's emerging oil and gas sector. The overall aim of the legal and policy review is to establish a high-level, strategic understanding of the current policy, legal and regulatory frameworks in Somalia in the sector. Global Impact of war in Ukraine on food, energy and finance systems

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres launched the Global Crisis Response Group’s first brief on the global implications of the war in Ukraine on food, energy and finance on Wednesday, 13 April 2022. Prices of food, energy, and fertilizer are skyrocketing, given the leading role of Russia and Ukraine in these markets, increasing risks of instability and unrest around the world. The Global Crisis Response Group on Food, Energy and Finance (GCRG) will support developed and developing countries faced with this three dimensional crisis. The GCRG will help decision makers to mobilize solutions and develop strategies and recommendations to help all countries, including the most vulnerable, to weather the interlinked crises. Preliminary analysis suggest that as many as 1.7 billion people in 107 economies are exposed to at least one of three risks – food, energy and finance. These scams, which may seek to obtain money and/or in many cases personal details from the recipients of such correspondence, are fraudulent. No personal or private information should be shared with these fraudulent correspondences and accounts at any time. The United Nations Environment Programme wishes to warn the public at large about these fraudulent activities being perpetrated purportedly in the name of the Organisation, and/or its officials, through different fraud schemes. Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change, the Working Group III contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) presents the Summary for Policymakers of the report Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change which is is the Working Group III contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report which will be completed this year. The report was approved on April 4 2022, by 195 member governments of the IPCC, through a virtual approval session that started on March 21 2022. Unless there are immediate and deep greenhouse gas emission reductions across all sectors, 1.5°C is beyond reach. This report outlines how emissions can be reduced by half in key sectors and outlines how humanity can improve their chances for success.
