After being kept out of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Employees, Canada's sleeping car porters formed the first Black labour union in North America. A new drama series airing on CBC and BET, The Porter, features the history of the primarily Black sleeping car porters in the 1920s.
Kimble Sherwood has been leading choirs in Montreal for decades performing with everyone from Patti Labelle to the Neville Brothers, and for governors general and even Nelson Mandela.
Charlene Hunte took over as the head of the Union United Church's food bank after retiring from the health-care field. She said it's important to make people laugh and dance, especially when times are hard.
Born and raised on Montreal's South Shore, Jennings credits the household she was raised in for her drive to keep serving the public. "I grew up where it was normal, in addition to raising your family and seeing to the needs of your family, to also be actively engaged in your community," said Jennings.
