At this point its a remnant of a fictitious country. the old axiom is you fight for the person on either side of you. so were asking are they well trained and is there a sense of unit cohesion at that level that results from very serious and competent training? and ive got my doubts. >> and there are calls again for us to get more directly involved beyond the training and the advisers that we sent into the country. heres what senator john mccain said about it this weekend. >> we need to have a r...

Which was back in 2011 i think that everyone around me was definitely understanding. you know united states military whether you think it or not, is actually a pretty progressive place, people are understanding, they just want to have good unit cohesion and good team work. so as that transition took place there was no negativity or any derogatory remarks of any kind actually even being made. it was more people were wanting to support someone who they thought was a vital member of their team. >> ...

>> now lets look at discrimination in the military based on sexual orientation. in 2010 president obama signed a landmark law repealing "dont ask, dont tell." the law that banned gay men and women from serving openly. well, as that repeal was being debated, then-congressman pence voted no. heres what he told our colleague chris jansing ahead of that vote. >> theres no question that to mainstream homosexuality within active duty military would have an impact on unit cohesion would have an impact ...

Act asking for an outside study to be done on the military policies towards hazing. >> you also wrote an op-ed about this as part of this crusade, you said hazing has no place in our military. it threatens unit cohesion, undermines our military readiness and deeply scars the volunteers forced to endure it. what is the bigger picture here about the future of americas military if we dont stop this kind of activity? >> well, of course we must take the mistakes that young people make seriously, live...

And the judge said no. thats still fresh in peoples minds, so do you understand how some people would be concerned about the change. >> i think people are concerned because of the perceived terror threat but also the nature of military service, which is uniformity. im sure the gunney remembers the first day at boot camp, i remember mine in annapolis, we were stripped of individuality. the message was clear, its not about you but the calling. its different than gays in the military, its a visible...

Your reaction? >> i agree with the sentiment hes talking about. all we have seen is accomodation and degradation of the unit cohesion. we have to remember, the sikh community, wearing a beard and turban are central to their faith. they have proven it wont hurt their safety. they can wear a mask. it piggybacks on some communicates that need it, and open the door for litigation jihadists, represented by c. c.a.r.e. and others and its a club on the head of those who to want maintain readiness. >> i...

And others to use this as a club on the head of officers that want to maintain safety and mission readiness. >> its unbelievable. the new york yankees will end up with stricter rules when it comes to their players than the u.s. army has. >> the real yankees. >> yeah. youre not allowed to have facial hair. by the way, there is like a few thousand of them, theyre going to get a chance to plead their case, wiccan. theyll be able to possibly get that in. if youre a sergeant and you tell me no, guess...

Afghanistan after the end of this year. it calls for having 10,000 men and women in the country next year and drawing down to nearly zero by the end of the presidents second term. the new approach is said to be intended to buy time to train the afghan army and still allow the president to leave office, saying he ended americas longest war. the pentagon is relaxing rules governing how military personnel can wear religious items or have religion themed physical attributes. the new guidelines mig...

>> the big issue is infantry. >> special forces aside. >> i know artillery and tankers but thats not the big issue. thats the one that it has to be decided. you cant just say well, its a fair thing to do. its got to be the workable thing to do. >> its not even the physical piece. i think its the culture of whether specific a american thing. actual tension is not good for unit cohesion whether gay or straight. the guys in the military are not homophobic. they realize thats another element of sexu...
