THE Bulawayo based opposition party, Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) has the described Unity Day an insult and provocation to the people of Midlands and Matabeleland regions who were seriously affected by the Gukurahundi atrocities.
Unity Day is an annual holiday celebrated on December 22, a day which the late Joshua Nkomo led PF Zapu signed a unity accord agreement with the late former state president Robert Mugabe’s Zanu to form what became Zanu PF.
The unity accord is credited for ending fierce hostilities in the western regions of the country in which an estimated 20 000 mostly Ndebele civilians were butchered by the military at the behest of the government.

Thirty-three years ago on this day, the country’s then two major political parties signed an agreement that has since been named the Unity Accord to end the violent, brutal, genocidal and savage massacre of Zimbabwean citizens mostly from the western half of the country by the government of Robert Mugabe.
The Zimbabwe National Students Union commemorates this crucial day in the history of our country even at a time when the nation is deeply divided and polarized thanks to the prevailing toxic politics in our beautiful country.
On this day we honour Dr Joshua Nkomo for letting go of everything in order to save lives and the country.

THE opposition Zapu party has claimed that the late former
President Robert Mugabe forced the late former Vice-President Joshua Nkomo to
sacrifice his party Zapu resulting in it being swallowed by Zanu PF in order to
stop the 1980s Matabeleland genocide.
Addressing an event to commemorate the Unity Day which was
born out of the Unity Accord signed by Mugabe and Nkomo in 1987, Zapu
spokesperson Iphithule Maphosa claimed the accord was only to end the
Gukurahundi massacres which human right groups say claimed 20 000 lives from
Matabeleland and Midlands.
