Documents filed in the Marshall County Court reveal some additional information on what happened in the early morning hours of Monday at Casey’s on Third Avenue when Michael Ray West, 48, of Marshalltown, was killed.
Rocky Dean Trujillo, 20, of Marshalltown, entered Casey’s with a small caliber handgun, shot West, who was an employee of Casey’s, in the chest and attempted to get money from one of the cash registers. Afterward, Trujillo threatened a customer by placing the barrel of the handgun against the customer’s head and demanded a cell phone. Trujillo fled to the 700 block of Bromley Street – three blocks away from Casey’s. He was arrested on Monday after Marshalltown Police Department and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation conducted interviews of potential witnesses.
A man was fatally shot early Monday morning at a Marshalltown convenience store.
Police responded to the shooting at Casey’s, 111 N. Third Ave., at about 3 a.m. to find the man suffering from a gunshot wound. That man has died.
Police are seeking a man seen leaving the area wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants. The suspect is possibly a Latino male with an accent and is described as being short in stature. No other information about the suspect is known at this time. Information about the victim is being withheld pending family notifications. Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances that led to this shooting.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office announced a Marshalltown woman – Teresa Hannam, 55 was killed by a train at 6:15 a.m. Thursday.
The Marshall County Communications Center was notified by Union Pacific Railroad a train traveling westbound had struck a person along the train tracks in the 2300-mile of Marshalltown Boulevard approximately one-half mile southeast of the Marshall County Landfill.
Marshall County Deputies and EMS were dispatched to the area. A search was conducted by law enforcement and emergency responders where an unresponsive female was discovered. The victim was identified as Hannam and declared deceased on scene.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Marshalltown Police Department, Marshalltown Fire Department, Unity Point Ambulance Service, Iowa State Patrol and the Marshall County Medical Examiner.
