Calm returns to Mayom after 7 killed, over 100 cattle stolen
Authorities in Mayom County of South Sudan’s Unity State say the security situation had returned to normalcy after seven bodyguards of Mayom county commissioner were killed in an ambush on Sunday.
James Chuol Gatluak, Mayom county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that his bodyguards were sent to recover over 100 stolen cattle by armed youth from neighboring Warrap State.
“My seven bodyguards were killed and three others sustained serious injuries and were admitted at the state hospital. Nobody was killed or wounded from the armed youth’s side because my bodyguards had not received orders to shoot,’’ he said.

General Stephen Buay Rolnyang, who was in August 2019 stripped of his rank and discharged from the South Sudan People s Defense Forces (SSPDF), on Monday declared that he had joined Gen. Paul Malong’s South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A).
The litany of reasons he gave for joining SSUF ranged from an attack on a cattle camp in his village to the usurpation of power in Juba by the Sudanese National Congress Party (NCP), poor welfare of SSPDF soldiers, tribalism, and corruption among others.

Since 1 November 2016, REACH has monitored the ports of Gap, Nyal and Katieth in Nyal town on a daily basis to determine the demographics, key push and pull factors, transportation routes and vulnerabilities of the newly arrived and departing population, and provide evidence for more effective humanitarian planning.
