The Unity Workers’ Union (UWU) will be seeking an audience with Minister of Environment Adrian Forde to find an amicable solution on the electronic deduction of dues for new members. Workers were off the job briefly on Thursday morning to draw attention to the issue. Despite indicating they were switching to UWU and writing to indicate their dues should be forwarded, this was not done. General secretary of Unity, Caswell …
For the second time in under three months, some workers of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) have taken industrial action. On Thursday morning they renewed demands for management to hear them out on their grouses.Reports indicate that the workers on the 6 o’clock shift refused to carry out their duties. They complained that despite giving management written notice of the termination of membership with the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), dues were still being deducted from their salaries for that union. They were supported by the Unity Workers’ Union (UWU) whose general secretary Caswell Franklyn said the union was willing to take a stand against the SSA for refusing to deduct UWU membership payments from the workers’ salaries. He told Barbados TODAY: “Sanitation has decided that they are not taking out the dues for me but they do if for other people.”He said management informed him that the UWU was not recognised as the entity representing the workers but he cha
Accusing management of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) of trying to block workers from joining his union, General Secretary of the Unity Workers’ Union (UWU) Caswell Franklyn is warning he will take the matter as far as the courts if necessary.Franklyn told Barbados TODAY that approximately 80 SSA workers have filled out application forms to join the UWU. However, several of them have complained to him that their requests for the SSA’s accounts department to stop deducting National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) dues from their salaries have been denied. The outspoken trade unionist said he believed this was a deliberate act to force the workers to remain with the NUPW even though they have indicated they no longer want that union to represent them.“These are workers who are trying to leave the NUPW and have gone to the accounts department and told them to ‘stop taking out my money for NUPW’ and they told them ‘no’. They told them to go to the NUPW and get permissio
Scores of “frustrated” Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) workers at the Wildey, St Michael depot are boycotting the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) and joining the Unity Workers’ Union (UWU).On Wednesday morning, workers turned up for a scheduled meeting with NUPW officials to get an update on the union’s discussions with management last month about their concerns and demands, which include wage, hazard pay and washing allowance increases. However, some of them expressed dissatisfaction with how the NUPW was handling their outstanding issues and have opted to switch allegiances to the UWU.When a Barbados TODAY team arrived, several workers were huddled at a nearby bus shelter where UWU general secretary Caswell Franklyn, who showed up around 6 a.m. at the request of some of the employees, spoke to the group about the way forward and how he intended to represent them.
Trade unionist Caswell Franklyn said he will challenge in court the Fair Trading Commission’s (FTC) decision to grant the Barbados Light & Power Company an interim rate increase.
