Rogue planets are difficult to find. Astronomers must use the most sensitive imaging devices to find them. A group of astronomers, led by an astronomer in France, have uncovered up to 170 new rogue planets, the largest discovery of its kind.

Over 170 giant rogue planets spotted floating through space by astronomers - Astronomers have discovered over 170 rogue planets aimlessly floating through space in a star-forming region close to the Sun.

Rogue planets have baffled astronomers for ages. Unlike regular planets which revolve around stars, these free-floating planets (FFPs) get ejected from star systems to move about in the galaxy on their own. In the latest discovery, astronomers found the largest cluster of rogue planets in a single star-forming region.

The planets are bigger than Jupiter and astronomers speculate there should be several billion more in Milky Way galaxy.
