In the first week of October, U.S. hotel industry occupancy climbed to 67.8%, which was just 0.1 percentage points (ppts) higher than last year. Remember, the comparable week last year included the Yom Kippur observance on Tuesday and Wednesday (4-5 October 2022).

Article - Weekly Global Hotel Performance Trends from STR: 1-7 October 2023 - Global occupancy, excluding the U.S, increased 0.8ppts week on week to 69.5%. As compared to last year, occupancy was up 6.8ppts, the largest year-over-year increase since May 2023. ADR climbed to US$161, up 18.7% YoY. RevPAR grew 31.5% to US$112.

The U.S. hotel industry closed September with weekly occupancy at 66.7%, up 0.5 percentage points (ppts) compared to last year. The impact of the Yom Kippur observance (24-25 September) had slightly less of an impact when compared to last yearโs Rosh Hashanah observance (25-27 September 2022).

Article - Weekly Global Hotel Performance Trends from STR: 24-30 September 2023 - Global occupancy, excluding the U.S, fell 3.1ppts week on week to 69.0%. This is similar to the decrease seen in the same week of 2019 (-2.6ppts). As compared to last year, occupancy was up 4.6ppts, which was the same as a week prior. ADR climbed to US$159, up 18.5% YoY. RevPAR grew 26.9% to US$109 up 26.9%.

The U.S. hotel industry saw a slow start to the week as the final day of the Rosh Hashanah observance held back travel. However, overall occupancy for the week rose to 68.5% from 67.7% in the week prior. As compared to last year, occupancy was down 1.1 percentage points (ppts) due to a Rosh Hashanah calendar shift, with the observance occurring in the week ending 1 October last year.

U.S. hotel occupancy (67.7%) was both helped and hindered by calendar shifts. Occupancy showed a significant week-over-week increase, up 7.4 percentage points (ppts) from the period that included the Labor Day holiday. At the same time, occupancy was down 1.5 ppts compared to the same week last year due to the shift of the Rosh Hashanah observance, which occurred over the weekend on 15-17 September.

During the week of Labor Day, U.S. hotel occupancy declined 1.2 percentage points (ppts) year over year to 60.3%. The decrease was generally in line with our expectations given the normalization of travel. As compared to 2019, the occupancy difference was a scant 0.5ppts. This was one of only five weeks this year when the occupancy difference was within one percentage point of the 2019 comparable.

Entering the first days of September, U.S. hotel occupancy (62.7%) was nearly identical to the same week last year (62.6%) and in line with our expectations. The measure was 3.7 percentage points (ppts) lower than the 2019 comparable, but the difference between the two was less than the previous four weeks, when the differential averaged 5.2ppts.
