This Thursday, homeless New Yorkers will ask questions directly of New York City mayoral candidates during a virtual forum. The historic event’s conception and organization was led in part by a New Yorker who is homeless himself – Shams DaBaron, an advocate for the city’s homeless and a resident at the Lucerne, an Upper West Side hotel operating as a shelter, who developed the event in partnership with activist groups including the UWS Open Hearts Initiative.
Thursday’s forum marks the culmination of a recent foray into activism for DaBaron, who spent last fall organizing and speaking at rallies alongside locals and his fellow residents to successfully block New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s efforts to move its occupants elsewhere.

Some 613 homeless New Yorkers died between July of 2019 and June of 2020, a 52% increase compared to the prior fiscal year, according to data released Tuesday by the de Blasio administration, a grim indicator of the effect of the coronavirus on people lacking permanent housing.
The largest number of those deaths occurred between April and June, when COVID-19 first began to bear down on the city. As infections grew and communities of color were devastated by the pandemic, so was the city’s vast shelter system, where single adults typically share a room with several others.

NEW YORK, NY (12/14/2020) (readMedia) As the Mayor continues to insist that displacing 190 men from the Lucerne shelter in the middle of the pandemic is in their best interest, despite their repeated claims to the contrary, UWS kids joined their homeless neighbors to celebrate the holidays. Last week, a judge granted the men of the Lucerne a stay order until the court can hear their appeal. Then on Monday, 22 former senior officials and aides in the de Blasio administration including former Deputy Mayors Alicia Glen and Richard Beury, as well as former DOH Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett wrote an open letter to the Mayor urging him to allow the men to remain at the Lucerne.
