Winter storm to intensify tonight in Upstate NY with heavy snow, sleet Updated Feb 16, 2021; Facebook Share Syracuse, N.Y. The massive winter storm stretching from southern Texas to northern Maine will crank up in Upstate New York tonight, bringing heavy, wet snow and, in some areas, sleet and freezing rain, into Tuesday morning. The heaviest snow is expected to fall in Central New York, with Western New York getting less snow and the Southern Tier and Capital Region collecting more sleet and ice. An inch or so of snow fell this morning, but after an afternoon lull the storm is expected to intensify as it crosses into New York from the southwest. The heaviest snow will fall from about 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Buffalo could get 8 inches during those 12 hours; Syracuse about 9 inches. In Binghamton and Albany, a couple of inches of snow are expected with a greater mixture of sleet and a thin layer of ice.
