The 87th Legislature Regular Session started in January and ended May 31, in full boil. The final few weeks of any legislative session are when the majority of bills live or die, and this year was no exception. As a subdivision of state government, counties and the constituency of those counties you always have a significant stake in laws that get passed.
Unfortunately, the state has become increasingly hostile to local government. One reason is that counties’ constituencies, especially large counties, are generally more progressive than the representatives at the state level. Because of gerrymandering and voter suppression, the Legislature does not look like the state in the same way as local government does.
