"The Dixie 3" is a short film about three nurses in 1963 who challenged the segregation rule in a Hampton hospital. Free screenings of the movie will run from Feb. 21 through 27 at the Hampton History Museum.

As Americans across the country partake in ceremonies commemorating the men and women who bravely gave their lives in service to the nation, one of the most solemn ceremonies is held annually at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Family and friends gathered at the wall on May 31 to celebrate the lives and honor the memories and sacrifices made by those who lost during the Vietnam War. It’s become tradition that during the Memorial Day ceremony, there is the first reading of the names of those who have been added to the Memorial Wall and those whose remains have been repatriated. Ten names were added this year. The Memorial Wall is now inscribed with the names of 58,281 service men and women.
Now, it is being told for the first time in its entirety by Reynolds herself.
In 1965, the Dover native became the first nurse to be awarded the Purple Heart in Vietnam. The award came after a Christmas Eve bombing of the officers’ quarters where she resided. Despite being injured herself, Reynolds immediately rushed to the hospital to treat those injured in the attack.

After the Christmas Eve bombing in 1964, the song “Silent Night” took on a different significance for Reynolds. Several people were injured in the bombing, including herself and three other Navy nurses. Two men in rooms next to theirs were killed. One of those men was brought to the hospital while she was being treated.
