Researchers from The University of New Mexico School of Engineering are part of a multi-institutional consortium selected by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) to pioneer research into robotic.
Around 6,500 satellites are in orbit, but only approximately half of them are operational. When a satellite runs out of fuel or breaks down, it is basically useless. Repairs, upgrades, or maintenance are virtually impossible in orbit.
The SURI program is is aimed at transitioning "high risk, high reward ideas in science" to "applied technology and advanced technology development," said Maj. Gen. Heather Pringle, AFRL director.
