More than a dozen people were killed Sunday by Russian missile strikes on apartment buildings and houses in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, an assault that the president of Ukraine called “absolute evil.”

KHARKIV, Ukraine (Reuters) -Three civilians were killed and 17 wounded in a pre-dawn rocket attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Thursday, the local emergency service said. The strike followed a Russian attack on Kharkiv on Wednesday, in which the emergencies service said 12 people were killed. "Last night was one of the most tragic of the entire war in the Kharkiv region," local governor Oleh Synehubov wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

A recent Russian attack on Ukraine has killed roughly 43 people, increasing the total death toll of civilians to over 5,000. The situation comes as the war between the two countries continues and has forced countries to side with either nation.

Russian forces pounded Ukraine's second largest city Kharkiv and surrounding countryside with rockets, killing at least 15 people, in what Kyiv called a bid to force it to pull resources from the main battlefield to protect civilians from attack.

Video journalist Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff of BFMTV was killed while riding in a humanitarian bus with civilians trying to flee the country.
