There has been little geothermal monitoring within Yellowstone’s famous hydrothermal basins. The lack of such data prevents scientists from tracking activity that may lead to hydrothermal explosions essentially steam bursts which are an underappreciated hazard in Yellowstone National Park.
A 3.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Kolob Canyon happened at 12:16 a.m. early Friday and was followed by a 2.6 magnitude aftershock near the same area at 1:27 a.m.
