Kansas voters turned out in high numbers for the 2022 primary election, driven by abortion politics on the Value Them Both amendment.

In the first electoral test of Americans' mood since the US Supreme Court reversed Roe v Wade, a traditionally conservative state votes to protect abortion rights. It could be a sign of what's to come.

Political experts and activists believe election results in Kansas will set the tone for a the rest of the country, or at least influence states as they make the own stances on abortion.

With the defeat of an amendment to strip abortion rights from the Kansas Constitution, abortion opponents fear laws restricting access could soon be struck down. But abortion activists say more needs to be done to expand access throughout the state.

(RNS) — ‘If this is what the bishops are going to do, if this was their plan for a ‘post-Roe’ world, then Catholics are going to be very disappointed,’ said one observer of the Catholic hierarchy.

Kansas voters upheld the right to an abortion, the first such vote after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Arizona and more also held votes.

The stunning defeat of the anti-abortion amendment in Kansas points to the unpopularity of the overturn of “Roe.”

Now that the Value Them Both constitutional amendment has been defeated, a big question looms: What's next? "This turns our attention to our pastoral efforts," said Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City. "While we can't protect women and children from abortion by the law, we can with love."
