Bella Van Gorp stood on the Franklin Junior High stage Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, a beaming smile on her face and hands on her hips. The 19-year-old from Pella has participated in the Iowa Miss Amazing contest since she was 13 and knows how to play to the crowd. Four area schools competed at the 54th Running of the Panthers Relays last night at Randy Wilson Track in Knoxville. Team scores were unavailable but several athletes and relay teams were able to post wins. The Pella girls were able to pick up five gold medals including Calla Kerndt in the 200 and Abby Cutler in the 3000 along with relay events including the 4×100, 4×200, and the 800 sprint medley. Following a sensational senior campaign, Allison Van Gorp finished her basketball career among the all-time greats on Eagle Lane. Van Gorp earned 2nd team All-State honors from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and 3rd team recognition from the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association, following a campaign in which she topped 1,000 career points. Pella Christian’s upset bid fell short last night, as number three in class 2A West Branch survived a scare from the Eagles 41-37 in a regional semifinal heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
