George Floyd s death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer in 2020 led to protests and calls for police reform across the county last summer.
Sioux Falls and South Dakota wasn t immune. Just a week after Floyd s death, hundreds of people gathered in downtown Sioux Falls to peacefully protest. As the march weaved through the central part of the city, some protesters broke off and headed toward the Empire Mall.
Some in the remaining group threw rocks at police. Windows in area businesses at the Mall were smashed.
A couple of those rocks whizzed by the head of police Lt. Jon Thum, who was among the many officers who responded to the scene. Earlier in the night, Vaney Hariri, a Downtown Rotary member and co-owner of Think3D Solutions, participated in the peaceful protest and gave a speech.
