University considers new colleges on the grounds of Hild Bede and other sites

The University told Palatinate that “It hasn’t yet been determined” exactly what will go where. Estimates for the size of the University’s new student accommodation developments have been published on the City of Durham Parish Council’s website. The figures were provided to the planning inspectorate by Durham University following the publication of its Estate Masterplan which includes the development of new colleges by 2027. The plans include up to 1,000 new beds on the Hild Bede College site at Leazes Road, 400-500 new beds on the Elvet Hill car park site adjacent to Trevelyan College and up to 500 new beds behind Josephine Butler College. The latter could potentially mean the loss of the college’s orchard and allotment.

Free entry as Oriental Museum, Durham, reopens with Lu Xun exhibition

ONE of Durham University’s most popular visitor attractions has re-opened to the public with a new exhibition – Lu Xun’s Legacy: Print Making in Modern China. To celebrate its re-opening, following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, visitors to the Oriental Museum are being offered free entry to explore the delights within. Its new exhibition, Lu Xun’s Legacy: Print Making in Modern China, celebrates the extraordinary range and versatility of style, technique and aesthetic expression in modern Chinese prints. Arguably one of the most important cultural figures of 20th century China, Lu Xun was a leading left-wing writer and printmaker and a passionate critic of the cultural and political conditions in early 20th century China.
