West Contra Costa Unified School District has set up a new literacy task force to answer long-held questions about the best ways to teach students how to read.

By Robert J. Hansen | OBSERVER Staff Writer - Kaylin Footman, a second-grade teacher at Paso Verde Elementary, is being held in the Sacramento County main jail after suffering an apparent mental health crisis, despite being ordered to be transferred to a mental health facility.

Between 300 to 400 students at the school walked to school from a local coffee shop as part of International Walk to School day.

By Kathy Chouteau Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia’s 22 nd annual fundraising drive for Verde Elementary School in North Richmond proved successful despite the pandemic. Mostly individual donors rallied to raise more than $3,000 to purchase new books from West County READS, tote bags, shirts, learning kits and other swag for Verde Elementary’s approximately 400 students.
