(Undated) — This is the final week of COVID 19 restrictions in Massachusetts. On May 29, people who have been vaccinated will no longer be required to wear masks or face coverings in or outdoors. Governor Baker says the high level of vaccinations in the state makes that possible. The CDC recommends that unvaccinated people continue to wear masks in public and in situations where they cannot social distance. All restrictions on businesses will be lifted on Saturday. The state of emergency ends June 15th.
(Undated) — The jobs picture continues to improve in Massachusetts, albeit slowly. The Massachusetts Bureau of Labor Statistics says the commonwealth added 51-hundred jobs in April, dropping the state’s jobless rate from 6.7 to 6.5 percent. Bay State employers have now added jobs for four months in a row and 11 out of the last 12.

The Vermont seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell again and at 2.9 percent in March is back under 3 percent for the first time since just before the pandemic hit in early 2020. The rate reflects a decrease of one-tenth of one percentage point from the prior month’s revised estimate of 3.0 percent. Vermont now is tied for the lowest rate in the nation with three Western states. There are still over 28,000 filing unemployment claims in Vermont. While this about a third the number of filers from the peak of the pandemic, it is still historically high. Ongoing claims typically would be under 6,000. The pandemic numbers also include new programs like the PUA, which in recent weeks has accounted for almost 9,000 claims.

Vermont Amtrak services were forced to close in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Vermont Transportation Agency decided to use this time to finish improvements to the passenger rail â the Ethan Allen Express train â that travels between Rutland and New York City. The project is expected to be finished in the winter or spring of 2022.
There are also early talks to have a stop in Shelburne.
Service will expand to Burlington and have additional stops in Vergennes and Middlebury, said Christopher Parker, the Executive Director of the Vermont Rail Action Network and a Railroad Consultant. Union Station in Burlington has not been in use since 1953.

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) today announced that Amtrak passenger rail service and inter-city bus service in Vermont will resume effective July 19, 2021. Governor Scott indicated at a recent press conference that he expected service to resume this summer. It was suspended in Vermont at the beginning of the pandemic last year. The Vermont Amtrak routes are among the last to restart.
Amtrak is expected to restore Rutland to Burlington passenger service by extending the Ethan Allen Express within the next couple of years and perhaps as early as next year. There has not been passenger rail service into Burlington in over 60 years. Amtrak is also hoping to expand many lines across the nation with proposed infrastructure funding as proposed by President Biden. For Vermont, this would further expand service back to Montreal for both the Vermonter (which was once called the Montrealer) and perhaps even the Ethan Allen lines. Montreal service was suspended in March 1995.
