A Labour-run council has been accused of “bankrupting” homeowners and potentially making some homeless after demanding they foot part of a £1.1 million repair bill.
The blaze broke out this afternoon at the eight-storey Verulam House in Hammersmith, south-west London.
It was extinguished by 2.16pm with no injuries, the London Fire Brigade said.

The London Fire Brigade said: Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters have been called to a fire at a flat on Hammersmith Grove in Hammersmith. Part of a flat on the fifth floor of an eight-storey block is alight. The Brigade s 999 Control Officers have taken 17 calls to the blaze. The Brigade was called at 13.21. Fire crews from Chiswick, Fulham, North Kensington and Lambeth fire stations are at the scene.
