Bad Astronomy | Holmberg 15A likely has only one supermassive black hole in it, not two or three

Around 760 million light years from Earth lies the galaxy cluster Abell 85, a mighty collection of about 500 galaxies all orbiting one another. At its center is the enormous elliptical galaxy Holmberg 15A… and I do mean enormous; some estimates put it at well over 50 trillion times the mass of the Sun, dozens of times more massive than the Milky Way. All big galaxies have a supermassive black hole in their hearts, millions or billions of times the Suns mass. In very rough terms the black hole...

Orion Magazine | Writers & Artists on the Influence of Barry Lopez

BARRY, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? You and I have been friends for almost forty years now. We’ve donned hip waders and walked together in the whitewater of your beloved McKenzie River. We’ve walked the woods and hills of the Goldstream Valley. One snowy afternoon, in the crepuscular winter light, as we hiked up the mountain above Cynthia’s and my house, you told me at length about your idea for a sprawling book that would somehow encompass the whole earth with the same intensity and specificit...

NRAO's 2020 Astronomy Highlights with Phil Plait – National Radio Astronomy Observatory

Illustration shows how the stars motion around the center of mass between it and the planet causes a "wobble" in its motion through space. The VLBAs ability to detect this minuscule effect revealed the presence of the planet. It’s been a year of adaptation for everyone. The pandemic has upended many of the ways we function as an organization, from the easy communication gleaned from informal office chats to how our crews might implement a configuration change moving many of the Very...

System found where planet & star forming while their disk is still forming too

Astronomers have found what may be a very weird case of a young star and planet forming in a dense cloud of gas and dust about 500 light years away. The young system is forming in a disk, which is common enough, but in this case the disk itself appears to still be forming from gas falling into it from the surrounding nebula! The nebula is called Barnard 59 (or B59), a dense, cold knot of gas and dust called a molecular cloud. In this case, it’s part of the remarkable Pipe Nebula, a complex o...

One Of The Largest Presumed Black Holes In The Universe Doesn't Seem To Exist, Sparking Astronomical Mystery

December 19, 2020 One Of The Largest Presumed Black Holes In The Universe Doesnt Seem To Exist, Sparking Astronomical Mystery Scientists have expressed their confusion that a presumed black hole -- which was estimated to be so big that it was characterized as "supermassive" and considered one of the largest known examples of the mysterious space phenomenon in the universe -- appears to not exist after all. According to Science Alert, the specific region of space that houses the new scienti...

Somehow, a Monstrous Supermassive Black Hole Has Gone Missing

Somehow, a Monstrous Supermassive Black Hole Has Gone Missing 18 DECEMBER 2020 The Universe is full of galaxy clusters, but Abell 2261 is in a class of its own. In the galaxy in the centre of the cluster, where there should be one of the biggest supermassive black holes in the Universe, astronomers have been able to find no trace of such an object.   And a new search has only made the absence more puzzling: if the supermassive black hole got yeeted out into space, it should have left evidenc...

Alien Planet Radio Signals Detected--"First Hint from a World Beyond Our Solar System"

Scientists suggest that there may be evolutionary parallels on the different worlds because creation tends to be economical. In what could someday lead to a confirmation of that insight, the first radio emission were collected from the magnetic field of a world beyond our solar system by monitoring signals from Constellation Bootes, with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) radio telescope in the Netherlands. From the Tau Boötes Star System “We present one of the first hints of detecting an...
