Print article The Native Village of Savoonga is situated on Sivuqaq (our traditional name for St. Lawrence Island), located in the northern Bering Sea, closer to Russia than Alaska’s mainland. Like much of rural Alaska, our communities of Gambell and Savoonga are off the road system and have limited housing; some of our homes lack access to clean drinking water, and our internet is spotty at best. Rural communities are some of the most disenfranchised, yet lawmakers seek to further their disenfranchisement by stymying rural Alaskan’s access, ability, and right to vote. All too often, when these kinds of decisions are being deliberated and made, Alaska Native voices are absent from the table. Presently, with the introduction of Senate Bill 39, the latest effort is to eliminate the convenient, effective and safe vote-by-mail program that many of us relied on during this global pandemic.
