PHOENIX â Phoenix police are investigating after racist chants interrupted the funeral service for former Phoenix City Councilman and Vice Mayor Calvin C. Goode.
During Tuesday morning memorial services held virtually, someone forced their way into the video, yelling racist remarks.
Vice Mayor Goode was just the second African American elected to the Phoenix City Council, and his 23-years of service are the most in the council s history. He dedicated his entire life to giving back to others, said Jevin Hodge, who is now the President of the Booker T. Washington Child Development Program, a Head Start initiative that Goode founded alongside his wife.

Goode came from humble beginnings, working for the Phoenix Union High School District before being elected as an at-large representative to the Phoenix City Council in 1972. Goode was the second African American to ever serve on the city council.

Former Phoenix District 8 Councilmember and Vice Mayor Calvin Goode was an extraordinary man and someone I feel quite privileged to have known. PHOENIX â Former Phoenix City Councilman and Vice Mayor Calvin C. Goode has passed away at the age of 93.
Goode first worked in the local education industry before serving more than two decades on the Phoenix City Council including time as Vice Mayor.
While on the city council, Goode was an advocate for minorities, womenâs rights and the rights of the LGBTQ community. He also played a major role in getting the city to officially observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday.
