Plans for six family homes in North Wales are blocked over fears they could be 'harmful' to Welsh

Plans for six family homes in North Wales have been blocked over fears they could be harmful to the Welsh language.   Planning chiefs say the houses, located in the seaside village of Morfa Nefyn, will likely be unaffordable for locals who speak their native tongue. They are concerned that outsiders who do not speak Welsh could move in and harm the language. Planning inspector Vicki Hirst explained that the impact of the homes on the Welsh language was one of the reasons for blocking it. She said: I note the intention to provide Welsh names for the dwellings, the proposed local marketing strategy and the associated benefits to the local economy during the construction phase, but I do not find these to be sufficient to outweigh the potential harm to the Welsh language through the housing not being genuinely accessible to those in the local communities.

Refusal of open market homes in Morfa Nefyn upheld by inspectors

CREDIT - Copyright Alan Fryer geograph.org.uk Planning inspectors have upheld a decision by Gwynedd Council to refuse plans for six open market homes on the site of a former Catholic church after citing the possible impact on the Welsh language. In 2019 Gwynedd Council approved the demolition of the Resurrection of Our Saviour church in Morfa Nefyn after it fell victim to a sweeping closure programme  announced by the Bishop of Wrexham three years earlier. Commercial Development Projects Ltd subsequently applied to build six open market homes on the site, but this past February saw Gwynedd’s Planning Committee unanimously refuse the plans after claiming that the Local Development Plan encouraged only affordable housing in such coastal villages.

Gwynedd planning inspectors back National Park in holiday lets refusal

The pair of semi-detached houses had been earmarked for a disused quarry at Craig-y-Lanch on the A493 leading into Aberdyfi. Google Streetview image. The Planning Inspectorate has backed the Snowdonia National Park after it refused proposals to build two holiday lets in Aberdyfi. The pair of semi-detached houses had been earmarked for a disused quarry at Craig-y-Lanch on the A493 leading into the village. Submitted by Shrewsbury-based Les Stephan Planning Ltd, the outline plans were turned down by the park authority in July 2020 after similar proposals were also refused in 2018. But after an appeal was launched with the planning inspectorate, an independent review has now fallen on the side of the park after inspectors remained unsatisfied with aspects of the proposals.
