HYDERABAD: National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) analysis has revealed Koyna region of Maharashtra in the eco-sensitive Western Ghats has witnessed a significant warming of 0.6 to 1 degree Centigrade over the past 100 years.
NGRI scientists and IIT Indore researchers have quantified the possible climate warming or cooling in the past 100 years in the Western Ghats using temperature-depth profiles of five boreholes at a depth of 140 to 198 metres in the Koyna region.
A research paper titled ‘Assessment of Climate Warming in the Western Ghats of India in the Past Century Using Geothermal Records’ was recently published in ‘Theoretical and Applied Climatology’.
