RICHMOND, Va. Gov. Ralph Northam directed the Virginia Unemployment Commission to invest $20 million to expand the agency s ability to process unemployment insurance claims.
The executive directive will require the agency to add 300 new adjudication staffers, make technology upgrades and modernize Virginia s unemployment insurance system by October 1, 2021.
Northam s action will help to speed up the resolution of unemployment cases that are flagged as possibly fraudulent or ineligible.
âVirginia is a national leader in getting unemployment benefits to eligible individuals, but itâs clear that complex cases must be resolved more quickly,â said Governor Northam. âThatâs why Iâm directing the Virginia Employment Commission invest $20 million to significantly speed up its adjudication process and im
Governor Northam Proclaims First Week in May as Virginia Public Service Week
RICHMOND Governor Ralph Northam today declared May 3–7, 2021 as Virginia Public Service Week to recognize the dedication of federal, state, local, and tribal government employees in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The annual observance honors approximately 701,500 public sector employees who work on behalf of Virginia residents.
“The past year has been extremely difficult and our public employees continue to rise to the occasion, going above and beyond to serve their communities and fellow Virginians,” said Governor Northam. “From those on the front lines to others who are behind the scenes, this week we have an important opportunity to salute the hard work of thousands of people who help make our Commonwealth the best place to live, work, visit, and raise a family.”
Imagine Donna Reidâs elation last year when she learned of a new state law that could save her almost $1,500 annually.

Among those looking forward to that law in April 2020 was the American Diabetes Association.
âInsulin has tripled in price between 2002 and 2013, forcing far too many Americans to make hard choices when it comes to the medication they need to live,â the group said in a news release back then. âWith one in 10 Virginia adults living with diagnosed diabetes, the skyrocketing cost of insulin is something the state cannot ignore.â
