Earths auroras are a glorious wonder, but our planet isnt the only place in the Solar System where these phenomena can be found.

Researchers led by Zachary Girazian, an associate research scientist in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, have learned how discrete aurora on Mars is formed. In a new study, the physicists report that the upstream solar wind properties interacting with the crustal magnetic fields found in Mars’ southern hemisphere strongly affect the formation and properties of the Martian discrete aurora.

Scientists with the United Arab Emirates Mars mission have spotted a worm-like aurora stretching halfway across the Red Planet.

Eight space missions that are either on the surface of an alien world, travelling deep into the solar system or exploring asteroids have got new extensions to do more science.

Mars, the moon and asteroids will get a deeper look from these spacecraft with eight NASA mission extensions.

The partnership will enable the sharing and collaborative analysis of data and observations made by EMM's Hope Probe and NASA’s MAVEN.

This will pave the way towards greater scientific collaboration and data exchange between the two missions.
