Sanjiv Bhasin says: “We should see 22,000 maybe next week. I still think it is the large cap index, which will move. Bank Nifty should be the one which should really charge things up because their numbers will be very, very optimistic. Bank earnings should be the best in this quarter.”

Morgan Stanley and CLSA, two respected brokerages, caution about volatility in the Indian market. Factors such as Lok Sabha polls and cues from the US market contribute to the volatility. However, strong macro fundamentals and corporate earnings growth in India provide stability.

Derivatives traders are already piling in, though, betting the Securities and Exchange Commission will give the green light to several ETF hopefuls this week and electrify the market.

Markets in Europe have had a slightly softer tone today after the modest gains of yesterday, with very little in the way of direction one way or the other.

Venugopal Garre says: “The current play on PSU infrastructure is good. It is good for the next maybe 12 months but you will have to start looking at more proactively potential opportunities in the private sector and whether these PSUs can actually tap that or not. Quite a few of them cannot. So this is a transition phase for them because a mix of capex will change over time.”
