The FBI director says Chinese state-sponsored hackers targeting of U.S critical infrastructure — including water treatment plants, pipelines and the power to grid — poses a national security threat.

The US and its key allies disclosed the Chinese campaign, dubbed Volt Typhoon, in May 2023 when analysts at Microsoft found it had targeted everything from US telecommunication networks to transportation hubs.

Several directors of security agencies and the FBI testified before Congress on the Chinese government's ability to infiltrate the U.S. cyber infrastructure.

During his appearance before the Congressional House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party on Wednesday, FBI Director Christopher Wray underscored the escalating threat of Chinese cyberattacks against vital U.S. infrastructure, including electrical grids, pipelines, and critical cyber systems.

Several directors of security agencies and the FBI testified before Congress on the Chinese government's ability to infiltrate the U.S. cyber infrastructure.

US authorities said Wednesday they had dismantled a network of hackers known as Volt Typhoon, which was targeting key American public sector infrastructure like water treatment plants and transportation systems at the behest of China."The Volt Typhoon malware enabled China to hide, among other things, pre-operational reconnaissance and network exploitation against critical infrastructure like our communications, energy, transportation and water sectors."

In testimony before Congress, Christopher A. Wray, the agency’s director, said Beijing was preparing to sow chaos if disputes with the United States flared into conflict.

"I do want the American people to know that we cannot afford to sleep on this danger," FBI Director Christopher Wray said.
