Labour and Quest for Nigeria s Devt: Reflections and Prognosis on Way Forward

By Femi Falana Comrades, friends, fellow compatriots, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are here to celebrate one of our very best; one of the best our continent can offer not just in terms of academic achievements and intellectualism, but also in clear-headed and consistent political activism and revolutionary practice. Professor Omotoye Olorode is not just an example in selflessness and sacrifice for the liberation of Nigeria and Africa, but also a study in humility and mentorship of generations. He is one Nigerian that has absolute confidence in the future and the ultimate triumph of our people over backwardness, neo-colonialism and imperialism.

Recovering N94tn unremitted fund, solution to economic crisis – Falana

Punch Newspapers Sections Adelani Adepegba  and Samson Folarin Published 30 April 2021 Published 30 April 2021 Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has asked the Federal Government to compel the Nigerian National Corporation to return unremitted funds between 2010 and 2014 and another N94tn held by oil operators. Falana noted that the announcement by the NNPC that there was no money to remit into the federation account next month amounted to blackmailing the government into accepting deregulation policy of the downstream sector. The human rights lawyer spoke in Abuja on Thursday at a lecture delivered in honour of Prof Omotoye Olorode. He stated, “The Auditor-General of the Federation has revealed that between 2010 and 2014, $16bn worth of crude oil was not accounted for by the NNPC. Also, the Revenue Mobilisation and Allocation Commission and NEITI have come out to say that the NNPC has failed to remit to the federation account about $22bn dividends paid by the LNG.

Censorship and freedom of speech: The Nigerian labour conundrum

Censorship and freedom of speech: The Nigerian labour conundrum On By Clarius Ugwuoha It was the late Ugandan despot, Idi Amin, who was credited with the immortal but infamous dictum: “You have freedom of speech. But freedom thereafter, that I cannot guarantee.” This appears to be the guiding principle in Nigeria and most other African countries. The history of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, as a trade union with capability to sway labour laws in the country and advance the interest of workers, has been heavily vitiated by graft, intimidation and compromise. The current Nigeria Labour leader, Mr. Ayuba Philibus Waba, is certainly in a dilemma due to the peculiar operating terrain. The contemporary Nigerian reality is worse than military dictatorship and the autocratic reflex is evident in every tier of government-citizen engagement.

Remembering Comrade Ola Oni (6/6/1933 – 22/12/1999) By Baba Aye

Remembering Comrade Ola Oni (6/6/1933 – 22/12/1999) By Baba Aye Both SWAFP and the NLP would be smashed by the military juntas (first of General Aguinyi Ironsi s for just 6 months but more so by General Yakubu Gowon s which lasted 9 years), as all partisan formations were repressed. But the tendency they had formed would continue in different forms (as well as SWAFP s till the early 90s) till the early 2000s. by Baba Aye Dec 23, 2020 Today makes it twenty-one years since Comrade Ola Oni passed on. He was one of the greatest leaders and teachers on the Nigerian Left, from the 60s till his death. He, along with Eskor Toyo, Baba Omojola and others split from the Socialist Workers and Farmers Party in Augsut 1964 (i.e., a year and four months after SWAFP was formed) to form the Nigeria Labour Party under the leadership of Michael Imoudu (Labour Leader #1).
