For decades, the tribe’s annual Pinenut Festival and blessing has been held the third week of September—the month the rabbitbrush turns yellow and it’s time to harvest. But now the weather and the seasons are different, says Andrea Martinez, the chair of the Walker River Paiute Tribe.

Storm chaser Carl Young of South Lake Tahoe is one of several people who died Friday in an Oklahoma tornado. He was 45. Young worked on Discovery Channel’s defunct “Storm Chasers” series.

Ideally, the mouth of a river should be narrow and deep. But sediment buildup makes the delta in Pyramid Lake too shallow and wide to protect spawning fish from opportunistic predators. 

Nevada broke its rainfall records this year, more than doubling to 9.20 inches of rain, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association’s Weather Prediction Center. After record rains, more than three-quarters of Nevada is now fully drought free for the first time since April 2020. It’s a vast improvement from the same time last year, when 99.5% of the state was in severe drought.
