Jackson councilor plans march to combat violence in city

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) A Jackson city councilor is hosting a march on Sunday in an effort to combat violence in Mississippi s capital city.
Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes told WAPT-TV that Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Burl Cain, Hinds County Sheriff Lee Vance and Jackson Police Chief James Davis are among the speakers planned for Sunday s “Stop the Violence” march.
The march is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Mississippi and Congress Streets and will end at Jackson City Hall.
“We are trying everything, everything in our power to try and let young people, old people, all people know to stop the violence,” Stokes told the television station.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Police in Mississippi’s capital city reported a half-dozen homicides in a 24-hour period.
The crimes in Jackson included the shooting deaths of two men near a nightclub early Saturday morning, WAPT-TV reported.
Police are also investigating a triple homicide that happened Friday.
In a statement, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba expressed sympathy for families of the victims and said that officials “are ever more resolved to find solutions.” Top Picks In Shopping
Man is found shot to death in U-Haul truck in Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) A man was found shot and killed inside a U-Haul truck over the weekend.
Police say they believe he was struck by gunfire while driving the truck around 9 p.m. Sunday. He had been shot multiple times, WAPT-TV reported.
He then crashed into a home, WJTV-TV reported. No one inside the home was hurt.
