THOMASVILLE — In a game that was supposed to be a matchup between two of the best defenses in the state of Georgia, the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets and

Lumpkin County won its first-ever State Duals wrestling title, holding off defending Class 3A champion Columbus in a thriller, 34-33, on Saturday at the Lumpkin County gym.

It was a banner day for northeast Georgia area wrestling teams on Friday in the Georgia High School Association State Duals.

The North Hall and Chestatee boys battled each other until the end, with the Trojans taking the win, 83-76, at Lynn Cottrell Court on Friday in a key Region 8-4A contest.

Northeast Georgia will be the epicenter for the Georgia High School Association State Duals finals beginning on Friday.

There are 22 schools appealing their new placement among the five S.C. High School League classes.

North Hall’s mission coming into the Area 8-4A tournament on Saturday was simple: get back to the State Duals for the first time since 2022.

With a new state tournament format in place, most northeast Georgia area and state wrestling teams will hold their Area Duals on Saturday.

In the 20 years of the Chick-Fil-A Classic, only six South Carolina-based teams have won either the American or National Division titles.
