James C. Carey acknowledged that Bucks County prosecutors have enough evidence against him to prove their case that he molested five boys starting in 1989 while still a police officer in Warminster.
The boys had gathered at the Warminster Recreation Center to shoot some hoops. Admittedly, they smoked some marijuana, too.
When they were caught by then-Warminster Officer James Carey, who ran the youth program there and knew some of the boys from his work as the town DARE officer, they knew they could get in trouble.
But Carey, prosecutors allege, saw the incident as an opportunity to prey on at least one of the boys.
He took the boy behind a curtain and while patting him down, fondled him, the now 37-year-old man testified in court Monday. He said he walked away and kept it to himself. After all, he testified, Carey had found marijuana in his sock.
A Cape May Court House man who is already facing charges of sexually abusing four teenage boys is now being charged with sexually assaulting a fifth teenage boy while working as a DA.R.E. officer more than two decades ago.
