The late Carl Westmoreland, the historian at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center worked closely with Paul LaRue, a small-town high school teacher, and LaRue's students on restoring the graves of Black veterans of World War I.
Susie Helfrich, 99, passed on Jan. 2, 2021, at Court House Manor in Washington Court House, Ohio, where she had resided in recent years.
She was a graduate of Washington Court House High School and Middletown School of Nursing. She was a lifelong resident of Fayette County.
When she was married to Neil Helfrich, they were quite involved in harness racing for many years. They raced horses under the Su Ne Rich stable name at racetracks in several states. The top pacing horses in the stable were Majestic Jerry ($341,930), Little Jerry Way ($314,794) and Jerry Gauman ($290,376).
They spent a lot of time traveling to watch their horses race out east at Brandywine Raceway and Roosevelt with Hervé Filion as their main driver, and every fall also loved to go to the Tattersalls Horse Sale in Lexington, Ky.
