Overtime for farmworkers could be a painful adjustment, Wash. growers say

Overtime for farmworkers could be a painful adjustment, Wash. growers say Angela Kerndl | KIMA-TV News © Provided by KOMO-TV Seattle YAKIMA, Wash. - Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill Wednesday in Yakima that will soon guarantee overtime pay for farmworkers - and local growers say it will be a painful adjustment. Growers are not yet required to pay time and a half, but they'll have to start in January when farmworkers put in over 55 hours a week. By January 2024, overtime will be due after 40 hours. In most cases, employers are not going to be able to afford overtime as they've already been facing increasing labor costs, says Mike Gempler with the Washington Growers League. He says many workers will likely get their hours cut off at that threshold, which he says may even deter some workers.
