The Indian government is considering the promotion of cactus plantations in low-irrigation areas to rejuvenate degraded land and explore biofuel production. A pilot project is currently underway in Rajasthan, where spineless cacti are being planted to produce biogas.

Eight states in India have yet to meet objectives under Mission Amrit Sarovar, which aimed to rejuvenate at least 75 water bodies in every district. While the national target of building 50,000 Amrit Sarovars by August 15 was achieved earlier this year, the eight states have not met local targets for building 75 such bodies in every district.
