TORONTO - The Maple Leafs have nothing tangible to strive for as regular season winds down.

Mitch Marner had two goals and an assist to set a career-high with 98 points on the season as the Toronto Maple Leafs thumped the Montreal Canadiens 7-1 on Saturday night. John Tavares, with two of his own, Auston Matthews, with a goal and three assists, William Nylander and Michael Bunting also scored for Toronto (47-21-11). Ryan OReilly and Erik Gustafsson added three assists each.

The Leafs made a couple of smallish roster moves tonight that seem like they could be quite telling for what is coming next for the Leafs. The assignment of Joseph Woll is perhaps the most interesting piece of the puzzle here as it seems to inform three separate decisions, including the Wayne Simmonds recall.

Jarnkrok has had a career year with the Leafs, scoring 19 goals, 18 assists, and 37 points in 71 games this season.

Of all the in-season additions, perhaps no one has been a bigger surprise for what the Rangers needed than Niko Mikkola.

When the playoffs start, there's no doubt that Michael Bunting will be the Toronto Maple Leafs x-factor based on his ability to chirp and score.

Right now, a lot of the focus around Leafs land is on bringing Ryan O’Reilly back into the lineup and finding the proper fit for him. While the Leafs are doing that, I’d suggest there is another bottom six centre the Leafs should consider bringing back into their lineup: Pontus Holmberg.
