more than 1,000 people dead. later this hour we will break down the results from tuesday s primary election. steve kornacki will join us from the big board. the big board. this morning, the house january 6th committee is preparing for its next public hearing, tomorrow, one day after hearing powerful testimony about former president donald trump s efforts to intimidate state lawmakers and election officials into overturning the results from the 2020 creeks. testimony from someone who detailed phone calls from trump and his allies pressuring them to find votes for trump or send fake protesters to washington. the trump team never produced evidence of fraud. he got emotional when he insisted he would method violate his oath of office. for me to do that because somebody just asked me to is foreign to my very being. i will not do it. some of the most emotional testimony came from a former georgia election worker and her mother who have been harassed and threatened after the
question even though there wasn t movement on the question about democracy. as we are hearing the former president at least spark rumors that he may run again in 2024, how are republicans feeling about the thought of him coming back into office? you know, again, if we saw movement on that last slide about biden legitimately winning among republicans, we see it on this question, too. the choice for 2024 gop nominee. right now, look, a different candidate 55% beating trump at just 44%. that s a turnaround where we were in the first half of this year when it was basically split 50% to 49%. so it seems to me looking at this data perhaps trump s hold on the republican party is slipping at least just a little bit. next question would be who would that other candidate be? that s the ron desantis would be my answer. that s why we run the primaries. that s why people vote. thank you. we are joined by former ohio governor and cnn senior commentator john kasich. good to have y
his progressive challenger, she went after him in a 2020 primary, narrowly lost, went after him again this year, it we want to a runoff, yesterday she conceded. cuellar is the winner. he will be the democratic nominee again. and this the border region, these three congressional districts around the border in south texas, all three of these are going to be potentially competitive this november. this is a new development. this is a new dynamic. this speaks to the shift we ve been talking about among hispanic voters who in the 2020 election we saw movement from the democrats to the republicans. we saw dramatic movement in this region of the country. and a few years ago we would have pencilled in this neck of the woods as strongly democratic. this november, all three of these congressional districts, trust me we ll spend a lot of time looking at those jose. steve kornacki, thank you
and one of the real components of a democracy is people having free, fair access to the ballot. currently in 47 states around this nation what we re seeing is voter suppression laws just like my home state of georgia where just currently even yesterday the secretary of state is saying he is going to purge 100,000 voters from the rolls in georgia. more than ever we need federal legislation that at the least is going to make sure that we protect the rights of voters and the democracy that is going to set a standard, a federal standard which the florida people act does tore voting rights and we need the john lewis voting act to restore the voting rights act of 1965. as we saw movement this week from senator manchin on voting rights, i thought of you and the march on manchin. your sense of the role that that played in getting the senator to come to the table? first of all, thank you for letting me on with these two powerful women so critical to this work.
