Monument to slain Shoshone chief re-dedicated in Harrisville

HARRISVILLE (AP) — The smell of burning sage wafted over a crowd of around 100 people gathered on Harrisville Road as Darren Parry, the former chairman of the Northwestern Band of Shoshone, invoked a blessing: “Oh Great Spirit ... let us speak to each other today and always with medicine words.” Representing his tribe, Parry was charged with unveiling a refurbished monument to slain Northwestern Shoshone Chief Terikee alongside a descendant of the man who is said to have killed him, the Standard-Examiner reported. Over 170 years ago, in a cornfield near what is now Highway 89, Urban Stewart, a pioneer settler, shot Terikee. The chief was returning home from a visit with Lorrin Farr, another Mormon pioneer and the first mayor of Ogden. The rest of the story is unclear, though there are conflicting accounts describing the moments that led up to the killing.

AM News Brief: Returning To College, Honoring Chief Terikee & Relieving Live Venues Financially

Published April 27, 2021 at 9:12 AM MDT Listen • 5:00 / There are close to 370,000 people in Utah who’ve attended some college but didn’t finish — more than in any other state — according to Nina Barnes with the Utah System of High Education. This story and more in the Tuesday morning news brief. Tuesday morning, April 27, 2021 State State Invites School Districts: “Grow Your Own” Teacher Some districts in Utah have begun using an innovative approach to recruit teachers from their own communities, and a recently signed state bill would help expand it statewide. The Grow Your Own Teacher and School Counselor Pipeline Program allocates $9.2 million for a three-year pilot to test its potential across the state. Districts have to apply for the funding, which would help pay for scholarships and mentors for people like paraprofessionals and school counselor assistants who are on their way to becoming licensed teachers or counselors. A report from Illinois State University found the model has been particularly successful in schools that are traditionally hard to staff, such as those in rural or ethnically and economically diverse areas.

Utah city to honor slain Native American chief with monument

Utah city to honor slain Native American chief with monument April 26, 2021 GMT HARRISVILLE, Utah (AP) — A city in northern Utah has announced plans to re-erect a monument this weekend to honor a Native American chief of the Northwestern Shoshone tribe who was killed more than 170 years ago. The city of Harrisville partnered with the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation and the Weber County Heritage Foundation to dedicate the historical marker at the site where Chief Terikee was killed in 1850, the Standard-Examiner reported Monday. There are conflicting reports of how and why the killing happened, but members of the partnership hope residents in the region will be inspired to research more about local history and think critically about it. Harrisville is about 40 miles (65 kilometers) north of Salt Lake City, near Ogden.
