King Charles III will become the first monarch in more than 30 years to ride horseback during a Trooping the Colour ceremony.

Charles will take the royal salute as Colonel in Chief of the Household Divisions seven regiments during the ceremony, staged on Horse Guards Parade.

The tradition of this parade, known as "Trooping the Colour", dates back to the reign of George II in 1748, who, although born on 30 October, wanted to take advantage of the good weather to celebrate his birthday.

The King was followed by other members of the Royal Family including the Princess of Wales and her three children, as well as the Duchess of Edinburgh

This is the first time Charles has taken part in the annual ceremony on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall as the head of state
