Boss of The Kiosk in Ulverston hits out after food kiosk targeted in burglary

A WELL-KNOWN community trader has hit out after his food and drink kiosk was targeted in a suspected burglary. Peter Ridge said he was left wondering why he had been the victim of the vandalism after the windows of The Kiosk in Ulverston were smashed in a late-night incident. The 62-year-old said the costs of repairing the damage could be ‘disastrous’ for his business, which has remained open during the current lockdown. Mr Ridge, who has run the popular spot on Victoria Road for nearly 18 years, said he was alerted to the damage after a phone call from his daughter.

15-year-old arrested after number of incidents in Ulverston 04/04/2021 Police are investigating a number of incidents which are believed to have been committed in the early hours of Saturday in Ulverston. The incidents, between between 2.30am and 4.30am, included burglary at the kiosk on Victoria Road, an attempted burglary at West Cumberland Farmers on Oubas Hill, criminal damage to a motor vehicle window on Newton Road and criminal damage to Sir John Barrow Primary school playground equipment. The suspect is reported to have been wearing dark coloured clothing and of a slim build. A 15-year-old boy from Ulverston was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, burglary and two counts of criminal damage and released on police bail.

NFUS and QMS lead tributes following Donald Biggar s sudden death

INDUSTRY-WIDE tributes have been paid to Donald Biggar, who died suddenly last weekend. An influential figure on many levels within the industry, these were led by his friend and NFUS Stewartry branch secretary, Michael Coutts and NFU Scotland president, Andrew McCornick. Mr Biggar was a lifelong member of the Stewartry branch, a member of the branch’s executive for more than 40 years and president of the branch in 1987/88, going on to serve as area president in 1996/97. Mr Coutts said: “Donald was NFUS area president at the time of the famous ‘Beef Blockades’ at Stranraer – a very challenging time for the union. He was the voice of reason and diplomacy when feelings were high and tempers too!
